You'll find lists of every company from Troy to serve in the Civil War, the prices of passage (and the names of the captains!) on steamboats plying between Troy and Albany, biographical sketches of the city's most famous lawyers, an account of Troy's significant contribution to the building of the Monitor, and an account of the huge centennial celebration in 1889. (If you want to know the exact assets that every bank opened with and just who was present when the cornerstone of each church was laid, this book's for you!). It's jam-packed with the minutiae of history: details and statistics on the construction of roads and buildings, the buying and selling of property, the founding of institutions and businesses and the growth of industry and commerce. For me, one of the biggest fascinations was recognizing the names I know from street signs on every corner in the various historical figures mentioned. This book is probably interesting chiefly to people who have some kind of connection to or familiarity with the city of Troy.
